Moravia, IA : One person died, two injured in a two vehicle crash on Highway 5 in southern Monroe County on Saturday, May 7, 2016
A two vehicle crash on Highway 5 in southern Monroe County on Saturday killed a Bloomfield man and injured three others, including two five-year-olds.
The crash happened approximately 2 miles north of Moravia — 121 feet north of the Highway 5 and 635th Avenue intersection — and was reported at approximately 8:17 a.m. on Saturday.
According to a minimal crash report by the Iowa State Patrol, a 2012 Toyota Sienna van, driven by Marlyn L. Copeland, 69, of Ottumwa, was driving southbound when the vehicle crossed the centerline for an unknown reason. A 2001 Pontiac Bonneville, driven by Mark A. Garretson, 47, of Bloomfield, was traveling northbound when it was struck by the Sienna van in an “offset head-on matter.”
Garretson died from injuries sustained in the incident.
Copeland was listed as one of three injuries, and was transported by air ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Anneliese R. Knotek and Josephine Knotek, both age 5, of Ottumwa, were listed as injured and transported to Mercy Medical Center in Centerville by ground ambulance.
The conditions of those injured are unknown.
The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. The report states Garretson and the two five-year-olds were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Seatbelt usage for Copeland was not provided in the report.
