Buckeye, AZ : Woman with knife arrested after trying to drive on I-10 shoulder to avoid crash scene on Friday, 1st May, 2020

A California woman was arrested after nearly striking a state trooper's patrol vehicle while trying to avoid a crash scene Friday morning on Interstate 10 in Buckeye, according to Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves.

DPS troopers were set up on westbound I-10 blocking the shoulder of the road to prevent vehicles from passing while a fatal crash was being investigated between Watson Road and Verrado Way.

The female driver of the car, identified as 41-year-old Chavon Maniates of Stockton, California, proceeded on the shoulder, Graves said.

A traffic stop was initiated and the driver fled, according to officials. Authorities used spike strips to stop the vehicle, and three occupants emerged, one was the driver with a knife.

A Taser was used on Maniates, and she was taken into custody, said Graves. Two children who were in the vehicle were turned over to family.

Maniates faces two counts of endangerment, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of felony flight and one count of reckless driving.
