Tazewell, TN : 9-year-old Claiborne County boy died after colliding with a motorist while riding his bike down a steep hill on Saturday, May 2, 2015
A 9-year-old Claiborne County boy was killed over the weekend after he ran into a car while riding his bike.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says Christopher Shearer, 9, was riding his bike Saturday afternoon down a steep hill along Dogwood Drive in Tazewell. Investigators say the boy was crossing Jay Drive when he hit the right front fender of a car, throwing him off his bicycle, 12 feet into the intersection.
Shearer was rushed to UT Medical Center. THP says the driver in the crash is not facing criminal charges and is also not being cited.
The little boy’s mother, Barbara Robertson, says family had been by his side hoping to see some kind of change before he was declared clinically dead.
“It’s not real at all. It’s still a big nightmare, it’s still like a dream. It’s like I’m stuck in a nightmare that I can’t wake up from,” said Robertson.
She’s been holding a teddy bear tightly which is comforting the family. The toy was Christopher’s favorite. Robertson describes her son as a little boy who loved to draw and dreamed of joining the military.
“He wanted to go in and be a mechanic on airplanes. So he always ran around the yard with his arms outstretched making plane noises. He’d always tell us that he was flying,” she said.
The third grader’s family says he’s now flying in heaven.
“It was a split moment and he was gone. And there was nothing anybody could do,” said Robertson.
Christopher was a loved younger brother, best friend, and playmate.
“I don’t want him to be gone because there’s like no one to play with now. I’m all by myself,” said his 11-year-old sister McKenzie Shearer.
Facing a tough decision, the family decided to donate Christopher’s organs as a way to let his spirit live on.
“It’s my son and he was so full of life and so full of love. He was so goodhearted and I want a piece of him to always be out there,” said Robertson.
“Makes me miss him,” added McKenzie.
