Hattiesburg, MS : 1 killed in Hub City crash on Thursday, October, 19th 2017
A woman attempting to elude police died after crashing into a building early Thursday morning in the Hub City.
Hattiesburg police responded to a reckless driver in a parking lot of the 4400 Block of Hardy Street just before midnight according to Hattiesburg Police Capt. Branden McLemore.
According to HPD Public Information Officer LaTosha Myers-Mitchell, the suspect struck multiple vehicles in the parking lot before fleeing the scene.
“Officers pursued the vehicle from that location down Hardy Street and when it entered the downtown area officers backed off the pursuit,” said McLemore. “From a distance officers saw the vehicle strike the side of the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center.”
McLemore said when the vehicle struck the side of the building, it became wedged between a tree and the brick front at Hardy Street and Front Street.
“The person was trapped inside the vehicle and the vehicle caught fire as officers attempted to extricate the victim,” said McLemore.
According to Forrest County Deputy Coroner Lisa Klem, the victim, who is a female will be sent to the State Crime Lab in Jackson for an autopsy to determine the identity.
The driver was the only person in the vehicle according to McLemore.
