Mt. Juliet, TN : 23-year-old woman arrested and Wilson County sheriff’s deputy injured after collided head-on with his patrol car on Monday morning, March 9, 2015
A woman has been arrested for allegedly causing a head-on crash that sent a Wilson County sheriff's deputy to the hospital.
Sheriff Robert Bryan said 23-year-old Haley Bell was driving down Central Pike near Mt. Juliet Monday morning when she crossed the center lane and hit a patrol car head-on.
"Didn't have a lot of time to think what to do," officer Brian Hudgens told Channel 4. "There was really just nowhere to go."
Hudgens was in the patrol car. He was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to be OK.
"I just slammed the brakes and cut my wheel as hard as I could to the right to keep her from hitting me head-on," Hudgens said. "She just caught the side of my door, knocking me into the trees. And I was pinned in the car, the doors were so bad."
Hudgens said the swift maneuver saved him from further injury.
"I think it also saved her from further injury," he said.
Police said Bell eventually crashed and ran away on foot. She was arrested.
Bell was injured in the crash. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she was treated and released to an officer.
Bell has been charged with leaving the scene of an injury crash, failure to exercise due care, failure to make notification of an injury crash, drug possession and reckless driving.
