Queens, NY : One person dead, 1 critically injured after car flips over in Queens on Sunday night, December 6, 2015
One man died and another was critically injured when their car spun out of control and slammed into a median pinning them both inside on a Queens street Sunday night, police said.
The silver car was driving at Laurel Hill Blvd. and 49th St. under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Maspeth when the driver, identified as 30-year-old Jorge Bermudez, lost control, police and witnesses said.
“I heard a big crash. It was a loud boom,” Mohammad Elhusaini, 32, said of the 10:30 p.m. accident.
He and and other bystanders ran to the car to help. Upon arriving, they saw both both men were unconscious. Elhusaini called 911.
“I was shouting at one of the guys because his eyes were closed, but his arm was moving around,” said Richard Aucapina, 19, who said he is in the Army. “He was bleeding from his face. But the other guy looked real bad, I think he had a collapsed lung.
“The crash was so loud, I thought a building collapsed,” Aucapina added.
The victims were rushed to Elmhurst Hospital Center where Bermudez died. The vehicle's passenger was listed in critical condition, according to police.
The NYPD’s collision investigation squad was probing the one-car accident early Monday.
