Baton Rouge, LA : Teenager killed, 8 injured in two-vehicle crash in Wednesday August 31, 2016
A 16-year-old was killed and five young children were injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday in New Roads, officials said.
Shortly before 4 p.m., a 1999 Buick LeSabre driven by Kelsey Moore, 23, of New Roads, was traveling northbound on La. 420, Louisiana State Police said in a news release. At the same time, a 2008 Ford E350 transit van driven by Robert Smith, 71, of St. Francisville, was traveling westbound on La. 10.
As the two vehicles approached the intersection, Moore failed to stop at a red traffic signal and collided with Smith’s vehicle, State Police said.
Sixteen-year-old Shafteanna Williams, of New Roads, was the front-seat passenger in Moore’s vehicle and sustained fatal injuries in the crash, State Police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Moore also had five passengers in the back seat, ranging in age from 1 to 6. All of the juveniles were unrestrained and sustained “minor to moderate injuries,” State Police said.
Moore, who was also unrestrained, suffered moderate injuries. Smith and his passenger sustained minor injuries.
Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers.
Upon release from the hospital, Moore will be charged with negligent homicide, reckless operation, failure to stop for a red signal, negligent injuring, no drivers’ license, and multiple counts of child restraint and seat belt violations, State Police said.
