MUSCLE SHOALS, AL : Local man killed in wreck on February, Sunday 4th 2018

Authorities said a Muscle Shoals man was killed in a one-car wreck Sunday morning on Elledge Lane, just north of U.S. 72.

Colbert County Coroner Justin Gasque identified the victim as 22-year-old Marcus Grant Lowe, 306 Fulton Street, Muscle Shoals.

Muscle Shoals Police Chief Clint Reck said the accident happened just before 2 a.m. on Elledge Lane.

Reck said the car Lowe was driving was traveling south on Elledge Lane, ran off the road, hit a culvert and flipped over.

"He wasn't ejected, he was wearing his seat belt," Reck said.

Reports indicate Lowe was driving a 2016 Toyota Scion that went off the west side of the road.

Police said the wreck happened just south of the railroad tracks that cross Elledge Lane.

According to 911 officials, the wreck was reported at 1:43 a.m.

Lowe was pronounced dead at the scene by Colbert County Deputy Coroner Malcomb Thomas at 2:38 a.m.

Gasque said Lowe apparently died from multiple blunt force trauma.

Emergency personnel at the scene said went the car went off the road, slammed into the driveway culvert causing the car to flip pinning Lowe in the car.

Firefighters from Muscle Shoals and Spring Valley were called to the scene and worked to extricate Lowe from the car.

Reck said police at the scene said there was no evidence of driver impairment as being the cause of the wreck.

"They say it could have been speed and weather conditions," the chief said. "When the accident happened it was raining pretty hard, so hard the officers couldn't mark the roadway because it would wash off the paint.

"It's just so sad when anyone loses a life. And this is just a tragic situation."

The accident remains under investigation by the Muscle Shoals Police.

This is the seventh traffic fatality in the Northwest Alabama Region and southern Tennessee counties of Wayne and Lawrence so far this year.

It is the first traffic fatality in February.
