Tulsa, OK : A Grove teenager died in a crash on Wednesday, June 21, 2017
A Grove teenager died in a crash during a traffic pursuit early Wednesday in rural Delaware County, authorities said.
Shane Russell, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Russell was driving a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup north on County Road 630 northeast of Jay at a high rate of speed when he passed a southbound sheriff's deputy, said Capt. Gayle Wells with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy reportedly turned around and initiated a pursuit around 2:27 a.m. but was unable to get close to the pickup because of the cloud of dirt trailing the vehicle.
Russell's truck ran off the right side of the road on a curve, struck a tree and landed on its top, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported. Russell was thrown from the vehicle.
A passenger in the truck was transported to Grove Hospital with injuries but was treated and released.
The passenger told officers that Russell sped away from the deputy because he was already in trouble for drinking and driving and didn’t want to go to jail, Wells said.
Court records show a Shane Russell was sentenced in Delaware County to a one-year deferred sentence in May for actual physical control of a vehicle while under the influence.
