Nashville,TN : atal Interstate 40 wreck causes traffic delays near Interstate 24 on January, Monday 8th 2018

One person was killed Monday in a fatal wreck on Interstate 40 that prompted lane closures and delays throughout the evening.

The crash was reported around 4:40 p.m. by eastbound mile marker 213, close to I-24.

According to Metro police Commander Gordon Howey, a vehicle drifted and struck a tractor-trailer before careening into a rock wall.

The driver of the car, whose identity has not yet been released, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the driver of the vehicle may have suffered a medical episode prior to the crash, though investigators are unsure whether a medical episode or impact of the crash killed the driver.

One right eastbound lane remained closed into Monday night, slowing traffic. Tennessee Department of Transportation expected the interstate would be cleared by 10 p.m.
