Blair, NE : An elderly couple escaped serious injury in an accident near Herman on Wednesday, January, 24th 2018
An elderly couple escaped serious injury in an accident near Herman shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday.
The driver, identified as Mary Lou Welch, 82, was traveling northbound around the curve of County Road P21 and Herman School Road when slick road conditions caused the vehicle, a Chevrolet Malibu, to slide into a ditch.
"They've driven this road many times, but slick road conditions were a contributing factor," said Washington County Sheriff's Office Patrol Captain Shawn Thallas. "One could maybe assume speed was also a factor, but slick road conditions is the biggest thing."
The Malibu, which bore Washington County plates, then rolled over onto the drivers side. Both Welch and her passenger were safely extricated from the vehicle, although Thallas reported that seat belts had not been in use.
"There was no complaint of pain, no visible sign of injury to either one," he said.
Both Herman and Blair fire and rescue squads responded to the call.
The Enterprise will update this story as details become available.
