Piedmont, SC : Mike Davis, 53, dies in I-85 crash in Anderson County on Thursday, June 2, 2016

A man who died after crashing near Interstate 85 in Anderson County has been identified.

Mike Davis, 53, of Florence, South Carolina, was identified Friday by his fingerprints, said Anderson County Deputy Coroner Charlie Boseman.

Davis hit a tree Thursday near mile marker 38. He was trapped inside a 1998 BMW convertible. Davis bought the car just a few hours before the crash, Boseman said.

Boseman estimates that Davis died around 5 a.m. Thursday, but his body was not discovered until a work crew in the area found it hours later. His car had gone down an embankment and was not visible from the road, Boseman said.

It is not clear why Davis was traveling through Anderson County. Boseman said Davis had recently been living at a halfway house in Durham, North Carolina. His relatives live in Florence, Boseman said.
