El Paso, TX : El Pasoans die in shuttle van wreck in Boston on Wednesday August 31, 2016
Two El Pasoans were killed Wednesday in Boston after a shuttle van was struck from behind, causing the victims to be thrown from it.
Joseph Rodriguez, 59, and Sandra Arreola, 47, died at the scene after a Subaru Legacy struck the back of a Hampton Inn shuttle van in East Boston, Massachusetts State Police officials said in a news release. The shuttle vehicle is a 2014 Ford van owned by Revere Hospitality LLC, police said.
The Legacy was traveling north on the Route 1A highway near Logan International Airport when it struck the van, officials said. The impact of the crash caused the van to veer to the left, where it struck a barrier, then veer back to the right, where it struck another barrier, police said.
The van driver and two other people, who are also from El Paso and were in the van, were not thrown from the vehicle but suffered serious injuries in the wreck, police said.
A 57-year-old El Paso woman, whose name was not released, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries and as of Wednesday afternoon remained at the hospital, police said.
A 45-year-old man from Tampa Bay, Fla., suffered "non-incapacitating injuries." The man, whose name has not been released, was a passenger in the van and was taken to Tufts Medical Center, police said. He has been released from the hospital.
The van driver, 53, also suffered "non-incapacitating injuries" and was taken to Tufts Medical Center. The driver, whose name has not been released, remains at the hospital.
The 27-year-old man driving the Legacy also hasn't been named. He also was taken to Tufts Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening. He remained at the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
State Police said they will determine whether criminal charges will be filed after their investigation is completed.
The investigation is being conducted by the State Police's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction and Crime Scene Services sections, officials said. Massachusetts State Police detectives from Suffolk County also are investigating.
