Memphis, TN : Man dies after crashing car into rushing water off Highway 51 into Loosahatchie River on Friday morning, January 8, 2016

In the early morning hours Friday, rescue crews dove into this rushing water off Highway 51 near Watkins frantically looking for a SUV that slid off the road, barreled through flood waters and into the Loosahatchie River.

"They located the vehicle 15 feet upside down approximately 10 to 15 feet underneath the water, and 50 feet from the embankment," said Lt. Wayne Cook.

Witnesses told emergency crews the driver was heading northbound in thick and heavy fog when they crossed the median.

"The vehicle flipped and inadvertently went into the water," Lt. Cook said.

Paramedics rushed the driver to the hospital where he later died.

Officials told WREG the water played a huge part in his condition.

Officers are hoping something inside the SUV will give them a better glimpse of what may have caused the deadly crash.

And with even more nasty weather on the way to the area, firefighters are warning drivers to stay alert and cautious.
