Flagstaff, AZ : Woman killed in Labor Day weekend ATV crash on Saturday, 3rd September 2016
The Coconino County Sheriff's Office responded to several incidents over the Labor Day weekend, and DUI enforcement was amplified throughout the state.
A woman was killed in a ATV crash near Stoneman Lake Saturday.
Sheriff’s officials said 49-year-old Dawn Foote, of Glendale, was killed after her ATV rolled while she attempted to drive over a berm of a stock tank, CCSO spokesman Rex Gilliland said in a press release.
The machine rolled and ejected Foote and her boyfriend. The machine landed on top of Foote and she died at the scene, Gilliland said. Her boyfriend was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Also Saturday, deputies responded to a 14-year-old female who was injured in an ATV crash at the Cinder Hills, Gilliland said. The extent of her injuries was unknown.
Deputies and Coconino County Search and rescue responded to a 16-year-old boy who had been hurt and lost while riding an ATV, Gilliland said. The boy had left the family’s camp at 11 a.m., but texted his mother at 5 p.m. and said he was hurt and lost.
Attempts to contact him by phone were unsuccessful, but by 6:15 a.m. he called his mother, who told him to call 911. He was located by a ranger helicopter soon after and taken to Flagstaff Medical Center, Gilliland said.
On Sunday night, deputies and Search and Rescue responded to a call about a 45-year-old man who had gone for a hike near Woody Mountain and had become lost, officials said. The man had left his campsite at 11 a.m., but had not returned by 8 p.m., Gilliland said.
The DPS Ranger helicopter was called in to assist with the search.
At around 6 a.m., the search and rescue sergeant had driven out of the area to get into cellphone range and the missing man walked out of the forest and onto the road. The man said he had become lost and had walked all night without finding his way back or any help, Gilliland said.
Also Sunday, one adult and one child were injured in an ATV crash at the Cinder Hills. Both passengers were wearing safety belts when they went into a deep ditch, Gilliland said. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Statewide, 463 people were arrested on suspicion of DUI over the weekend, down from 469 last year and 700 in 2014, according to statistics from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Data show 21 people who were arrested on suspicion of DUI were under the age of 21.
Of the arrests this year, 128 were extreme DUI statewide, meaning the person’s BAC was 0.15 or above.
According to the statistics, 2,645 officers and deputies participated in DUI enforcement patrol over the weekend statewide.
