Erie, PA : 79-year-old pedestrian killed in Summit crash on Tuesday October 27 2015
A 79-year-old pedestrian was killed Tuesday night when she was hit by a car after running into the road in the 7500 block of Perry Highway in Summit Township just after 9 p.m., state police said.
Martha S. Hansen, of Lincoln, Vermont, died at UPMC Hamot after she was taken there for internal injuries, facial injuries and broken bones, according to police.
Hansen was headed west across the road, when she ran out in front of a Hyundai sedan heading south at the intersection of Route 97 and the entrance to a Country Fair, according to police.
The driver of the car, Jacob D. Franksain, 37, of Erie, was not injured in the crash, police said. Police said a female passenger in the Hyundai was also uninjured.
Police said Franksain attempted to brake and steer away from Hansen, but still struck her.
Moments before the accident, Hansen was walking with a female caretaker, but she moved away from the caretaker and ran into the southbound lane of Perry Highway, police said.
The Hyundai's windshield was shattered and its front end was heavily damaged.
