NEWTON, KS : 2 injured, multiple vehices and building burned in crash, fire on US-50 in in Newton on Wednesday, 11th October 2023

Newton firefighters continue to monitor hot spots after a large fire caused by a wreck on Highway 50 that injured two people.

The incident started around 1 p.m. on Wednesday when a minivan or SUV traveling west on U.S. 50 near Old Main blew out a tire. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crossed the median, hitting a semi traveling eastbound on the highway. The semi drove off the road and struck an RV storage facility, starting the fire. The fire spread to the grass on the north side of U.S. 50.

The driver of the smaller vehicle was taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with minor injuries. The semi-driver was able to get out of his vehicle and was taken to NMC Health with minor injuries.

The fire burned about nine RVs and seriously damaged the building. Fire units from Newton, Halstead, Sedgwick and Hesston all responded to the fire.
