Asbury, MO : Two Bella Vista residents killed in crash on Missouri Highway 171 near Asbury on Monday, May 23, 2016
Two Bella Vista, Arkansas, residents were killed in a crash involving three vehicles that closed Missouri Highway 171 north of Asbury for more than four hours on Monday.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said driver Dorothy J. Kropp-Henke, 89, and her passenger, Winston J. Henke, 94, were killed in the crash at 12:35 p.m. Monday, on Highway 171 one mile north of Asbury. Both were wearing seat belts.
The patrol said the other drivers, Joseph S. Kyle, 70, Baxter Springs, who was driving a tractor trailer, and Andrew J. Guest, 21, Joplin, who was driving a pickup truck, were not injured.
The patrol said the crash happened when Kropp-Henke's minivan, which was traveling south, crossed the center line and hit Kyle's northbound tractor trailer head on.
After the impact, debris hit Guest's pickup, which was also traveling north, but no damage was done.
Kropp-Henke and Henke were declared dead at the scene by Jasper County Coroner Rob Chapel.
The Missouri Department of Transportation blocked the highway for about four hours while a patrol accident reconstruction team, aided by Jasper County deputies and the Asbury Fire Department, investigated the accident. The surviving drivers were tested for alcohol as required by state law.
The patrol said the two were the 46th and 47th fatalities on Southwest Missouri roads in 2016.
