Mount Airy, N.C : Hillsville woman killed in a two-vehicle crash near the Sheetz convenience store on Wednesday morning, July 6, 2016

A Hillsville woman died at the scene of a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning in Mount Airy, N.C.

Penny Triplett, 30, was a passenger in a 2001 Ford Explorer that was struck by a vehicle that police said ran a stop light.

Sgt. J.M. Church of the North Carolina Highway Patrol told The Gazette that the accident happened at 10:18 a.m. on July 6, at the intersection of the Interstate 74 East off-ramp and U.S. 601, near the Sheetz convenience store.

Trooper B.S. Stokes, who investigated, reported that the driver of a 2008 Pontiac Torrent was traveling down the off-ramp when it failed to stop for a red light. The vehicle struck the Explorer, which was traveling south on 601, in the passenger side.

“This caused the Explorer to roll over several times,” Church said. “A backseat right passenger [Triplett] was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle and killed.”

The driver of the Explorer, Robert Ray Roberts of Lexington, N.C., and three other passengers were sent to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., for treatment of non life-threatening injures, Church said. Seven passengers in the Torrent received minor injuries.

The driver of the Torrent — Reva Michelle Brown, 31, of Charleston, W.Va. — was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failing to stop for a red light and having no operator’s license. She was not taken into custody or held on bond.

Stokes found no drug or alcohol impairment for the driver of either vehicle.
