Asheville, N.C : 1 dead after New Leicester Highway wreck early Monday morning, March 13, 2017
Leicester, North Carolina
A crash at the intersection of New Leicester Highway and Newfound Road left one driver dead early Monday morning.
Multiple vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred around 7:40 a.m.
Cecilia Cook, 57, of Leicester, died in the crash, after attempting a left turn onto New Leicester Highway from Newfound Road, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol. Failing to yield to right-of-way traffic, Cook's vehicle was struck on the passenger side by Shane Rogers, 35, also of Leicester.
"He was traveling south, and she turned in front of him," said Trooper Kelly Rhodes. "She did not have her belt on."
The impact from the crash caused Rogers' vehicle to veer off in another direction, causing impact with two other vehicles. There was minimal damage to the third car and fourth pickup truck, and both motorists were able to drive away from the scene unscathed, officials said.
Rogers and his passenger, Alisha Barrett, were both transported to the hospital for minor injuries, but are expected to be OK.
Traffic was backed up on New Leicester Highway for about an hour while the Highway Patrol investigated the scene, determining that Rogers was not at fault in the accident.
