New Gloucester ,ME : The driver seriously injured after School bus and car collide at the intersection of Penny and Intervale roads on Wednesday ,June 10th 2015

The driver of a car was seriously injured when it collided with a school bus in New Gloucester on Wednesday morning.

The crash happened at the intersection of Penny and Intervale roads just before 9 a.m., according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said the Acura, which was driven by Robert Doughty, 59, of Yarmouth, crossed into the path of the bus and hit it head-on.

Intervale Road, which is Route 231, was closed in both directions from Route 115 to Route 202, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.

School officials said the crash involved a bus with MSAD 15. The bus was being driven by Kathleen Allen, 56, of Gray, police said.

The bus was headed to the Burchard A. Dunn School on Morse Road in New Gloucester.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Department said the children suffered bumps and bruises in the crash.

The superintendent's office said officials notified the parents of the students who were on the bus. There were 10 third- and fourth-graders on the bus, along with the bus driver.

The bus driver was taken to Central Maine Medical Center for observation, according to the superintendent.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital by helicopter with life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff's department.

There was no one else in the car.
