Huntersville, N.C : One person killed after car trapped beneath tractor-trailer on Mount Holly-Huntersville Road early Monday morning, December 21, 2015

Police were investigating a deadly crash that blocked a busy road in Huntersville early Monday morning.

First responders were called to the wreck just after 6 a.m. in front of the Department of Motor Vehicles building on Mount Holly-Huntersville Road near Reese Boulevard.

Scott Ryland Cates who was driving a Volkswagen died at the scene.

Circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation, but investigators told Channel 9 that a car was stuck beneath a tractor-trailer and that the driver of that car was killed.
Police closed the road between Reese Boulevard and Hambright Road for nearly five hours, finally reopening it around 11 a.m. The Department of Motor Vehicles is closed until the scene clears.

Crews blocked access to the DMV office and a factory while they investigated the crash. Factory workers had to park at a nearby apartment complex and walk to get to work.
According to workers at that factory, the truck had just finished making a delivery and was leaving.

Police aren't sure if speed was a factor in the crash but said the speed limit is 45 mph in the area. Officers warned that all drivers should be more vigilant, especially when driving on roads with a lot of trucks.

“It's always important to pay attention to speed limits, pay attention to your surroundings, pay attention to a way out,” said Huntersville Police Capt. Kevin Johnston. “Good defensive driving you always know who to go to if someone blocks your path whether it is an animal or another vehicle.”
