Port Jervis Police said Friday evening that a vehicle stolen from Goshen on Thursday crashed into two parked cars. The driver then fled the scene of the crash, police said, before being apprehended Friday afternoon.
The subject, Samuel Mittelmark, 19, of Shohola, Pa., initially pursued by the Town of Deerpark Police after failing to stop in connection to a traffic violation, traveled from a location near the on-ramp of Interstate 84 into Port Jervis City limits, police said. He then continued down East Main Street to Jersey Avenue where he veered into a parking lot, hit two parked cars, and fled the scene, they said.
Mittelmark had been arrested for possession of a stolen motor vehicle by the New York State Police on Dec. 17. He was released from Orange County Jail on Thursday, and after his release, Mittelmark stole the Dodge Dakota from a location on 17M in Goshen.
Port Jervis Police had joined Deerpark in the pursuit, and Deerpark police were able to identify the driver as well as information that the vehicle had been stolen from Goshen. A multi-agency investigation began, and PJPD and state police investigators working together Friday were able to locate and apprehend Mittelmark.
Port Jervis detectives charged Mittelmark with criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree and reckless endangerment in the first degree, both class D felony offenses, and the class A misdemeanor offenses of unlawfully fleeing a police officer in the third degree, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, and reckless driving.
