Lincolnton, North Carolina
Troopers with the NC Highway Patrol say 54-year-old Lora Holman died in a crash in Lincoln County Thursday morning.
The crash happened on Dan Rhyne Road at Cat Square Road in Lincoln County. Troopers say two cars were involved and a street sign was knocked down. So far the investigation shows Holman was taking her three grandkids to school when, investigators say, she pulled out into traffic.
Crews will return to the scene Friday to determine if the sun played a role in the accident.
Speed may have also played a factor. The report shows Jeffery Black may have been traveling about 50 miles per hour at the time of the accident. The speed limit is 35 miles per hour. Black maybe cited.
While the investigation continues neighbors claim where the accident happened is a dangerous intersection and have been calling for safety improvements.
"Since I been living here," neighbor Jesse Adams said, "I know four people have been killed here, maybe five. Lot of wrecks happen out here."
Adams was at the crash scene and tried to help. He told WBTV that he saw the grandmother and tried to feel for a pulse, but it was too late. He then saw the children.
"The little girl," Adams said, "She was crying and screaming. She had a bad head injury. She was awake."
School leaders say the grandchildren went to Northbrook Elementary School and West Lincoln Middle. Counselors will be on hand to help students cope with the news their classmates were in a terrible accident.
A family friend told WBTV that the grandson has been released from the hospital, while the two others remain at a hospital in Charlotte.
