Opelika, AL : Tuskegee student killed in Sunday morning crash on I-85 on Sunday, December 4th, 2016
A Tuskegee student was killed in single-vehicle crash Sunday morning on Interstate 85.
Malik Cooper, 20, of Atlanta, was killed when the 2000 Honda Accord he was driving left the roadway and overturned before striking several trees, according to a press release from Alabama State Troopers.Cooper was second-year business student at Tuskegee University, which released a statement Sunday evening.
“It is always tragic to lose a member of our university community but it is particularly difficult to lose one of our students – our very best and brightest – who had his entire life before him," said Brian Johnson, president of Tuskegee University, in a statement. "We send our deepest thoughts and prayers to both his family, his friends and classmates during this extremely difficult time."
The university said its counseling center is open to students who would like to talk with someone.
The crash occurred near mile-marker 44 in Macon County on I-85.
Police said Cooper was not using his seat belt and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
