ALACHUA COUNTY, FL : Two dead following crash on Interstate 75 on Sunday, 5th August 2018
Two Lakeland residents were killed early Sunday on Interstate 75 after their vehicle veered out of the right lane and struck a resting semitractor-trailer before crashing head-on into a tree, according to an FHP news release.
The deceased have been identified as Sherickea Petula Ferguson, 26, and Jahaziel Ferguson, 8.
The Lakeland residents were southbound in the right lane of I-75 near Mile Marker 396, which is three miles south of the U.S. 441 exit in Alachua. The release did not include their vehicle’s make or model.
A semitractor-trailer driven by Jofre Orozco, 53, of Mount Dora, and carrying Luis Garcia, 48, of Orlando, was at rest in the right emergency lane when the other vehicle left the roadway and struck the left side of the truck.
Orozco and Garcia were not injured, the release said.
The vehicle that Ferguson was driving continued to travel forward and off the road to the right. It entered the grassy shoulder and struck a tree, coming to rest on the west shoulder.
Troopers said the crash was not alcohol- or drug-related.
