A bus leaving Bolton High School with 32 children on board crossed the center line and hit a truck towing a Bobcat utility work vehicle on Monday.
The bus then veered off the road and crashed into a tree.
Bus driver Jacqueline McKinley and 10 students were taken to the hospital, according to Shelby County Schools. Although Tennessee Highway Patrol is reporting eight students were sent to the hospital.
Crash victims were treated at Regional Medical Center, but no one was admitted. Witnesses say McKinley, 52, appeared to get the worst of the crash.
Tow driver Gary Bryant says the bus driver struck his truck along the shoulder. The bus then slammed into a tree ripping apart the roof above the driver.
"I could tell it was a lady, driving, and I said, 'Oh my God, what is going on with her," Bryant said. "I mean, everybody said she was just turning toward me."
SCS wants parents to know that the route number of the bus involved was NG093.
"A girl sitting next to me thought the bus was going to blow up, so she threw the door open and we jumped out," student Fatou Sow said.
The district said, in part, in the following statement:
We appreciate the assistance of the Tennessee Highway Patrol and Shelby County Sheriff's Department and Fire Department for assisting with this accident and helping make sure other buses on this route were able to get students home safely.
Durham School Services released the following statement:
Durham School Services' top priority is the safety of the students we transport. As such, we are working closely with the law enforcement as the investigation continues. We respect the privacy of our employees and will not disclose information regarding the bus driver. The bus is equipped with a camera, but considering this is an active investigation nothing will be released publicly.
Shelby County deputies and THP officials are still investigating as of Monday evening. they will not file charges against the driver of the truck but are still investigating to determine if the bus driver will face any charges.
