Driver killed after car rolls down embankment on Marine Drive
A woman was killed after being thrown from a car that rolled down an embankment on Marine Drive Monday night.
Portland police said 55-year-old Mary Augustine Yakutis-Suit of Sandy died in the crash.Police said the crash happened just before 8 p.m. on Northeast Marine Drive near 142nd Avenue.
The car was going westbound on Marine Drive when it went off the road and rolled down the bank toward the Columbia River. Yakutis-Suit was ejected from the car and landed on the riverbank, police said.
The Airport Fire Department used its boat to search the water near the crash in case there were other people in the car. Police believe Yakutis-Suit was the only person inside.
Foggy and dark conditions challenged first responders a little bit; it's unclear if the fog played any role in the crash.
Police are investigating what caused the crash. No other cars were involved, they said. They reopened Marine Drive early Tuesday morning.
