JOHNSON VALLEY, CA : Authorities ID two Phelan residents killed in head-on Highway 247 crash on Saturday, December 10th 2016
Authorities released the identities of two Phelan residents driving in a 2013 Kia Soul who were killed in a early Saturday morning head-on collision on Highway 247 that also injured two Barstow residents.
San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department officials said Kyle Vincent Rojas, 22, and Megan Michelle Palacios, 23, were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the collision at approximately 1:30 a.m. and found a 2006 Hummer H2 and the Kia collided just east of Walker Road. Officers learned the Kia, driven by Rojas, was traveling eastbound at an unknown speed and the Hummer westbound at approximately 55 mph. The Kia swerved into the westbound lane and the Hummer crossed into the eastbound lane to avoid the oncoming vehicle, CHP officials said.
The Kia moved back into the eastbound lane and eventually collided head-on with the Hummer.
A 25-year-old woman passenger of the Hummer suffered major injuries and was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The 30-year-old man driving the Hummer suffered minor injuries and was also transported to the hospital.
A properly restrained 1-year-old boy was not injured at the scene of the crash.
"This collision is still under investigation to determine if the consumption of alcoholic beverages was a factor in this collision," CHP officials said in a statement.
