Bay Area ,CA : Motorcyclist killed after he crashes and flips off Antioch Bridge on Sunday afternoon ,April 12th 2015
A motorcyclist traveling at high speeds crashed on the Antioch bridge Sunday afternoon and likely flipped over the railing into the water far below, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Witnesses saw a motorcycle driver speeding southbound on the bridge just before 4:30 p.m. and minutes later, reported the crash and the catapulting driver over the railing, said CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt.
The motorcycle was found on the shoulder at the high point of the bridge, but no motorcyclist, Van Eckhardt said.
The Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department and the Coast Guard searching the water had not located a body as of early evening.
The vertical clearance of the bridge is 135 feet, according to the Bay Area Toll Authority.
“It's a good height,” Van Eckhardt said. “It's a shipping channel.”
The Golden Gate Bridge is 220 feet off the water at its highest point.
Initial reports indicated a car was involved in the incident, but investigators were still looking into the involvement of other vehicles.
The CHP officer said it’s the first time in memory that a crash has resulted in someone flipping over the side on the Antioch Bridge.
“It happens, but not on this bridge,” Van Eckhardt said, adding it’s more often the case on overpasses rather than bridges. “Sometimes it's the price you pay for your misdeeds.”
