Tijeras, N.M : One person dead after head-on crash followed by fire on Route 66 near Tijeras on Tuesday, April 21, 2015
A deadly crash closed a New Mexico highway for hours Tuesday morning. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened around 5:00 a.m.
The white SUV was heading east on Highway 66 near Tijeras when it supposedly crossed the median and hit a westbound, silver SUV head-on.
The 23-year-old driver of the white SUV was transported to a local hospital with broken ribs and other non-life threatening injuries. BSCO said the other driver, 58-year-old Robert Gonzales from Tijeras, was trapped inside his vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Deputies say it’s too early to determine if the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash. They do believe fatigue was was a factor. Authorities say no charges have been filed yet.
