Hughesville, Pennsylvania
A 36-year-old motorist faces charges following a brief high-speed pursuit late Friday night that began near routes 405 and 442 and ended on Main Street after the driver struck two utility poles, numerous trees and damaged several parked vehicles, including a 1950 Ford tow truck, according to state police.
Vincent Rizzo, of 266 Jerry Lane, Upper Fairfield Township, traveled into the borough, a speed zone of 35 mph, at 90 mph, Trooper Troy Hansen said in an affidavit. Police allege Rizzo was drunk.
The trooper had activated his cruiser’s emergency lights and siren after seeing the pickup truck Rizzo was driving cross the center line and swerve back and forth as he traveled north on Route 405 about 11:55 p.m.
Rizzo ran a red traffic light at Main and Cemetery streets and hit a parked truck near Academy Street, Hansen said.
Rizzo then drove up on the sidewalk and crashed into trees, several light posts, the two utility poles and the antique tow truck that was parked on the lot of Murray Motors body shop at Main and Academy streets, Hansen said.
Alan Colabine, who lives on Main Street, heard the crash and called 911.
“It was loud,” Colabine said.
Borough Fire Chief Steve Stiger said debris from the crash covered an entire block.
One of the wheels on Rizzo’s truck came off the vehicle and crashed into the side of park car, Stiger said.
One of the light standards hit by Rizzo’s truck was severed and crashed into the side of a home, the fire chief added.
Rizzo was taken by ambulance to the UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center and upon being discharged was immediately placed in police custody.
He was arraigned about 6 a.m. Saturday before District Judge Christian Frey on charges of felony fleeing police, resisting arrest, driving under the influence and numerous summary traffic violations. He was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail.
