Additionally, there are no streetlights and no sidewalks in the area -- on West 17th Street near Henry Avenue in Lehigh Acres.

A Florida Highway Patrol report said 14-year-old Wyatt Norsworthy was walking down the shoulder of the roadway when he tried to cross over to the street to get to his bus stop. That's when a car, traveling westbound struck him. The driver was not cited.

Norsworthy suffered a concussion and a broken leg and will have surgery on the leg on Wednesday.

In the meantime, FHP is reminding drivers to be aware of school kids walking to bus stops, and suggesting that walkers wear brighter clothing if they're going to be on streets like this one.

"There are no sidewalks for the kids to walk, so they walk in the street, and it's dark," said Evelyn Leonardo, the driver's mother.
