Man killed in three-car crash near Nauvoo identified in Bloomington Illinois
The Nauvoo man killed Wednesday in a three-vehicle accident on Ill. 96 was driving a pickup truck police said he had stolen earlier in the day in Fort Madison, Iowa.Ryan Kayne Jenkins, 25, was identified through an autopsy performed Thursday in Bloomington
The Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson, Iowa, is handling arrangements.Illinois State Police reported Jenkins was driving a 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck that had been reported stolen in Fort Madison. Police said Jenkins stole the truck after he had been chased by Iowa authorities for unspecified reasons between Burlington and Fort Madison at speeds of more than 100 mph.Police said Jenkins abandoned a PT Cruiser he had been driving in Fort Madison and stole the truck that had been parked along 19th Street. The Hancock County Sheriff's Department was notified when the truck sped past a toll booth operator on the Santa Fe swing span bridge that connects Iowa to Illinois.The accident occurred at 3:56 p.m. when the truck Jenkins was driving near the Nauvoo-Colusa Junior High School crossed the center line as it was traveling south on Ill. 96, seventh-tenths of a mile north of Hancock County Road 2450 North.The pickup crossed into the path of a 1999 Chevrolet truck that was pulling a trailer with a combine head driven by Mark L. Turner, 59, of Nauvoo. Jenkins' truck struck the trailer and combine head, then spun counterclockwise and collided head-on with a northbound 1984 International grain truck driven by Artchie L. Kirby, 64, of Warsaw.The stolen truck then caught fire with Jenkins still inside.Kirby was taken to Fort Madison Community Hospital, where he was treated and released.Ill. 96 was shut down for just over five hours. Hancock County Sheriff Scott Bentzinger said the road reopened to traffic at 9 p.m. Wednesday.The Hancock County Sheriff's Department, the Hancock County coroner, the Nauvoo Fire Department and the Niota Fire Department assisted at the scene.
