Cornville, AZ : Gilbert bicyclist killed in northern Arizona on May 17, 2014

A Valley woman has died after she was struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle in Cornville, north of Phoenix.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office identified the woman as 48-year-old Ethelyn Hartline of Gilbert.

Officials said the accident involved a vehicle and three bicyclists.

Hartline was air-lifted to Flagstaff Medical Center in critical condition and died just before 6 p.m.

The other bicyclists were identified as 52-year-old David Waechter and his 16-year-old daughter, also from Gilbert, who were riding together on a tandem bicycle.

YCSO says the vehicle involved was a 2011 Chrysler van, driven by 90-year-old Nelson Shaum from Cottonwood.

According to a press release, Shaum was traveling westbound on Cornville Road and told deputies he believed there was enough room to pass as he approached the bicycles in front of him.

But Shaum said he felt he needed to stay in his lane as traffic approached from the east.

As Shaum began to pass the bicycles the front passenger side of the van hit the bicycle ridden by Hartline.

Hartline was thrown from the bicycle and up into the windshield of the van, eventually landing on the roadside.

The van then ran over the bicycle, dragging it some distance.

YCSO says Hartline was wearing a helmet.

The man and teen on the tandem bike were also involved in the collision and knocked of their bicycle and injured.

They were transported to Verde Valley Medical Center for treatment and released.

The van driver was not injured.

YCSO says no signs of impairment were detected in the driver of the van.

Shaum was issued an MVD Driver reexamine notice by the investigating deputy and released pending follow-up.

The investigation is ongoing into the factors which caused the accident.
