HILLSBOROUGH, NC : Juror dismissed in trial of ex-student accused in crash on Thursday, October 6th, 2016

A juror who fell asleep has been dismissed in the trial of a former UNC Chapel Hill student charged in a wrong-way wreck that killed three people.

Local media outlets report Superior Court Judge Henry Hight dismissed the juror during an afternoon break on Thursday in the trial of Chandler Michael Kania of Asheboro and replaced him with an alternate juror. Hight said that from the time it was pointed out to him, he counted 25 minutes that the juror was asleep.

Kania pleaded guilty on Monday to multiple charges and is currently on trial for second-degree murder. Investigators say Kania was driving north in the southbound lanes near the Interstate 85-Interstate 40 split in Orange County last year when his Jeep Wrangler collided with a Suzuki, killing three people.
