A La Porte man was airlifted Tuesday night following a single vehicle accident along CR-325W.
Tyler Kiger was driving southbound on CR-325W, just south of U.S. 20, at about 7:30 p.m. when his vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a heavily wooded gully, according to Captain Mike Kellems of the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department.
“His car became not only tangled up in the trees, but was heavily damaged as well,” Kellems said.
“They had to extricate him from the drivers seat, that entailed cutting the roof off,” he added.
According to a Facebook update from Kiger’s father, Ron Papke, the injuries Kiger sustained included a broken shoulder, facial fractures and uncountable cuts all over his body.
Kellems stated while he hadn’t the specifics of the injuries, Med Flight helicopters typically are only called to crash scenes when the victim has sustained serious injury.
“They believe speed was probably a factor,” Kellems said in reference to the cause of the crash. “They haven’t found anything else that would’ve caused it at this time.”
Ron Papke posted Kiger’s condition had improved once flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital stating: “Tyler is in good shape…Thanks for all the prayers and support. Thanks to all the emergency staff for saving his life.”
