ATKINS, AK : Drivers injured after semi crash near Atkins on Monday, 26th September 2016
Law enforcement officers diverted traffic off Interstate 40 into Atkins and to the east for over three hours after two 18-wheelers crashed near the 95 mile-marker of Interstate 40 on Monday evening.
Arkansas State Police, Atkins police, Pope County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), Atkins area firefighters and EMS paramedics were dispatched to an accident in the eastbound lane of I-40 before the Atkins exit. One semi trailer ran into the back of another semi, sending pieces of both vehicles and a cargo of melons from one of the semis all over the interstate highway.
Atkins police diverted traffic off the interstate at the 94 exit, down Church Street (State Highway 105) and to U.S. Highway 64, where they could travel east and get back on I-40 at the exit 101 in Blackwell (Conway County). The eastbound lane opened to traffic after 8 p.m.
Both drivers were taken to Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Russellville and St. Vincent's in Morrilton for treatment of their injuries. Their condition was not known by authorities.
