New Smyrna Beach ,FL : 17- Years old Brianna Nelson killed in car crash after her Suzuki Forenza veered off the road and then hit a tree along I-95 on Friday morning ,March 27th 2015

An Edgewater teen was killed in a car crash on Interstate 95 in Volusia County early Friday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said Brianna Nelson, 17, died when her Suzuki Forenza veered off the road, overturned and then hit a tree on I-95 at mile marker 251 in New Smyrna Beach just before 1 a.m. Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene.

"When troopers got into the vehicle, they noticed the 17-year-old girl was not seat belted, and she still had her cellphone in her hand," FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said. "Based on the circumstances of the crash itself, what witnesses are saying, the way she left the roadway, we do suspect she made an error and possibly could be from a driver distraction."

Nelson's family was too upset to speak to WESH 2 on camera, but said she was on her way home from her restaurant job when the crash happened.

The state patrol will check cellphone records as they continue to work the investigation.
