Nogales, AZ : One person died and nine others were treated for injuries after a head-on crash on Thursday, December, 21st 2017
One person died and nine others were treated for injuries after a head-on crash Thursday morning on Interstate 19 in Nogales.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a Honda Accord driven by a female was traveling north on I-19 near Kilometer 8 shortly before 7 a.m. when the vehicle drifted off the right shoulder of the roadway onto the rumble strip. The car then crossed both northbound lanes and the median, entering the southbound lanes.
At that point, the Honda struck a Ford SUV head-on, causing the Ford to roll over. Both vehicles came to rest in the southbound lanes.
All nine people traveling in the SUV were taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Nogales, along with the driver of the Honda, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
One of the passengers in the SUV was pronounced dead at the hospital. “The others received treatment for a number of injuries,” DPS Spokesman Bart Graves said in an email.
Graves described the person who died only as “an older male,” saying that family notifications were still pending.
“There is no suspected criminal involvement,” he added.
The crash left I-19 southbound closed until around noon Thursday. The northbound lanes were also temporarily closed to allow medical helicopters to land.
