A Cuyahoga Falls man is dead and a 14-year-old boy lost his leg after a crash Saturday night. Police say that, shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, an officer saw two motorcycles doing wheelies and traveling at a high rate of speed near East Exchange and Spicer streets. The officer attempted to stop the motorcycles but they took off eastbound on East Exchange Street at a very high rate of speed. The officer lost sight of the motorcycles. When the officer got to the intersection of East Exchange and South Arlington streets, he stopped and looked in all directions to see which direction the motorcycles had traveled. That's when the officer then noticed sparks on the roadway several blocks south on South Arlington Street. According to the Traffic Reconstruction Unit, one motorcycle, traveling at a high rate of speed, struck Shawn Brumbaugh on his bicycle while he was crossing westbound across South Arlington Street, at the intersection of Ackley Street. "It was just excessive lots of blood you could see that his leg was gone," said Cynthia Henderson who came out of her house Saturday night when she heard the screams. "When he lost his leg he screamed because he saw his leg was gone and he went into automatic shock looking around not knowing what to do. The bicycle was up the street all balled up it look like it could've been a crushed can." An officer at the scene applied a tourniquet to the Brumbaugh's leg before paramedics arrived. He had his leg amputated due to the accident at Akron Children's Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition. Brumbaugh has undergone several surgeries and an amputation right above the knee. The motorcyclist, Eric Reppl, 29, of Cuyahoga Falls, was ejected and slid underneath another car traveling southbound on South Arlington Street. "He wound up going out of control and going underneath somebody's car so we had a lot of people out here lifting up the car trying to pull him out," said Henderson. He was taken to Akron City Hospital where he died about 30 minutes later. "When you get a phone call from the police department 1,000 miles away that your grandson had been killed it's terrible," said Reppl's grandfather Denver Harper who was in Florida. "Now we are just trying to get through it." He says it will be hard to get through after going through a similar motorcycle accident years ago. "My son was paralyzed at the age of 18 in a motorcycle accident," said Harper. "Our condolences go out to them we can understand how they must feel." The driver of the car traveling southbound during the incident, an Akron woman, 20, was not injured. The second motorcyclist fled and has not been located.
