NORTH PORT, FL : Fatal fuel tanker crash shuts down I-75 in North Port on Friday, 23rd September 2016

All lanes have reopened after being closed for several hours due to a fuel tanker semi overturning in a fatal North Port crash, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

It happened Friday night in the southbound lanes near mile marker 182 just north of the Sumter Boulevard exit in Sarasota County.

Reports say the semi while drifting between the left and right lanes of the highway, he lost control and rolled over.

In overturning, the fuel tanker transporting 8,500 gallons of fuel lost about 2,500 gallons. Emergency crews have been on scene all night cleaning up the scene.

Sixty-eight-year-old George Ervin of Valrico, Florida died from the crash.

The northbound lanes were also blocked for several hours after the crash as a precaution but have since reopened with heavy traffic at 15 mph, according to the North Port Police Department.

The southbound lanes were also shut down for several hours from Sumter Boulevard to Toledo Blade. Reports say they will stay shut down at least into Saturday during the evening hours at a minimum. Emergency and road repair crews had to fix necessary damages.

Crews from North Port's Fire and Rescue, police department, FHP, Nokomis Fire, Charlotte County, Sarasota County, and Southern Manatee also assisted in the efforts.
