Canon, CO : Fremont County Sheriff's Office, Florence PD and semi involved in U.S. 50 crash on Thursday, February 2nd 2017
Two law enforcement vehicles were struck Thursday morning after a truck rolled into them on U.S. 50.
Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis said they were called out to the accident at 8:32 a.m. and that the accident occurred on U.S. 50 right where it meets with Colo. 67.
A box truck reportedly struck a Fremont County Sheriff's Office deputy and a Florence Police Department officer.
"Neither officer was injured," Lewis said, adding that both officers were not in their cars when they were hit as they were responding to a separate call.
The entire back end of the FCSO's squad was smashed in and the FPD's car also had heavy damage to the back.
The box truck fell into a ditch on the side of U.S. 50.
Lewis said the crash forced the highway to be shut down to traffic for a short amount of time.
During this time, traffic was being diverted onto Colo. 67 heading toward Florence.
Lewis said the driver of the box truck, a 42-year old male, was taken to the hospital to be medically evaluated, but the extent of his injuries were unknown.
Lewis said at this time, CSP would not be able to release the box truck driver's name.
He said the cause of the crash is unknown and still under investigation, but they do not think alcohol and drugs were a factor.
Cold weather and freezing rain Thursday caused the roads to be slippery in many areas of Fremont County, but Lewis did not say if they believe the accident was solely weather related.
