Monett, MO : Scooter, pickup crash results in major injuries on Saturday, March 25th 2017
A Monett man received substantial injuries in a pre-dawn crash between a scooter and a pickup truck in Monett.
According to Police Sergeant Dennis Camp, Scott Aldridge, 22, was driving a 2014 Buddy 50 scooter west on Dairy Street at 5:36 a.m. Aldridge approached an eastbound Ford F-250 pickup, driving by John Schnake, 55, of Wentworth, who was on his way to work at EFCO Corporation. Schnake turned his pickup north onto Central, not seeing the scooter, resulting in the scooter, which had the right-of-way, colliding broadside with the pickup.
Aldridge, who was not wearing a helmet, which is not required by law, received a variety of injuries and was taken by Barry-Lawrence Ambulance to a Springfield hospital for treatment. Schnake was unhurt.
Camp said Monett police have been expecting just such an accident for some time. He expects the police department to recommend a city ordinance similar to one adopted in Springfield requiring scooter operators to wear a helmet, have insurance and require specific safety equipment. He believed the crash will be referenced in the future when such a city law is proposed.
