Worcester, MA : 23-year-old Ian McGrath facing a motor vehicle homicide charge in crash that killed Devalter Marini Rocha in Worcester on Wednesday, 27th November, 2019

The 23-year-old man accused of driving on a sidewalk and striking signs before crossing back onto a Worcester street and fatally hitting a pedestrian will face motor vehicle homicide charges in court.

Worcester police identified the driver involved in the fatal crash on Chandler Street Wednesday morning as 23-year-old Ian McGrath of Worcester.McGrath was charged with motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, driving under the influence, failure to stay in marked lanes, failure to wear a seat belt, failure to slow for a pedestrian in the roadway, speeding, driving negligently as to endanger and driving on sidewalks.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Worcester District Court.

Worcester police were called around 12:13 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian and a 54-year-old Framingham man at Chandler and May streets.

The victim, Devalter Marini Rocha, was taken to a local hospital where he died. McGrath was taken to the hospital with injuries, but he is expected to live.

McGrath, according to police, was driving his 2011 Toyota Camry north on Chandler Street as Rocha was crossing Chandler Street.

“The Toyota Camry hit a parked unoccupied vehicle. The operator proceeded to travel on the sidewalk hitting a flower box and pedestrian crossing sign,” police said. “The vehicle entered Chandler Street again and crossed over the double solid line impacting the pedestrian in the southbound lane. The vehicle went on to hit an unoccupied parked 2004 Jaguar sedan.”
