Athens, AL : Man remains in hospital after single-car accident between Yarbrough Road and Linton Road on Monday night, March 20, 2017

An Athens man was airlifted from the scene after his vehicle left the roadway between Yarbrough Road and Linton Road on Monday night, police said.

Geoffrey Gene Gilliland, 41, of Bill Walker Road, was traveling south on U.S. 251 in a 2005 Chevrolet truck when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a ditch, mailbox, gas meter and a tree, police chief Floyd Johnson said.

Athens Fire Department had to remove Gilliland from the truck, police said. He was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital, where he remained this afternoon, according to Huntsville Hospital.

Traffic on U.S. 251 was detoured for about an hour due to a natural gas leak caused by the collision, police said.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation, Johnson said.
