Monmouth, IL : 22-year-old man killed in wrong-way crash on Interstate 55 in Lincoln early Tuesday, July 26, 2016

A 22-year-old Lincoln man was killed early Tuesday when he struck two semi tractor-trailers while driving the wrong way on Interstate 55.

Illinois State Police said Nathan S. Gunterman was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage northbound in the southbound lanes of I-55 near milepost 133 at Lincoln at 2:17 a.m. when he struck the first semi.

Gunterman initially hit the left side of a semi driven by Brett Lapham, 29, of Winn, Michigan. He then continued northbound and struck the front of a southbound semi driven by Joshua R. Leighton, 32, of San Angelo, Texas, police said.

Gunterman was pronounced dead shortly after the crash occurred. No one else was injured.
The Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the accident. No charges are expected.
