Peoria, AZ : A 63-year-old man is dead after the ATV he was driving fell into a dry canal at South of Lake Pleasant on Friday, 7th October, 2016

A 63-year-old man is dead after the ATV he was driving fell into a dry canal Friday afternoon in Peoria, a fire official said.

Ramon Martinez Rubio Jr., of Peoria, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to information from police and fire officials.

Rubio and his dog were aboard the ATV when it drove off the side and into the canal, according to Peoria police spokesman Brandon Sheffert.

Rubio was driving along the area with another person who was following in a separate ATV when the incident occurred, according to Sheffert.

A call for help came out at about 3:15 p.m. just south of Lake Pleasant.

Police do not believe impairment is a factor, Sheffert said.

The dog survived and was returned to familiy, according to Sheffert.
