BURLINGTON, VT : Vt. State Police reconstruction team visit site of deadly wrong-way crash on Thursday, 27th October 2016
There are new details in the investigation into the crash that killed 5 teens on I-89.
State police reconstruction experts were back at the scene Thursday.
Investigators say new witnesses continue to come forward and it's sending them back into the field to piece the crash scene together.
Authorities returned to the Interstate to take new measurements at the crash site.
Three weeks ago the kids were all traveling in one car on Interstate 89 when police say 36-year old Stephen Bourgoin intentionally hit them head-on going more than 75 mph. He survived and is charged with five counts of murder.
State police say they are continuing to assess things like the terrain and the condition of the cars involved prior to the deadly crash. Investigators are also talking about the role speed played in the night's deadly events.
"This was a high speed collision, it's interstate speeds, and it's even higher in some cases, I think the initial crash is going to be a high speed impact and that's common for the Interstate and then the secondary impacts that we're seeing are probably even higher, but we're still, it's early on and we haven't tied everything together," said Lieutenant Gary Scott, Vermont State Police.
State police say 20 investigators and about 60 other witnesses are involved in recreating the crash and the timeline for the deadly events.
"On our side it is just making sure we are just tying all the vehicles to where they were and how they were impacted for the first collision that occurred and then the secondary collision that occurred , obviously it was a chaotic scene and people's memories change and the evidence we have does not match up with what they say, so we want to go back and make sure that we get it right based on the evidence that we have," said Scott.
State police say the investigation is a top priority, but are reminding folks that they may never get all the answers they are looking for in what they're describing as a massive scene.
