El Paso, TX : Teen dies after far East El Paso wreck early Tuesday morning, March 7, 2017
A teenager died early Tuesday morning after he crashed into a cement pillar in far East El Paso, officials said.
Charlie Hurtado, 18, was driving a 2016 Toyota Tundra pickup south in the 1300 block of Joe Battle Boulevard near Bob Hope Drive at about 4:45 a.m. when he attempted to make a left turn using a turnaround lane, El Paso Police Department officials said.
Hurtado, who was the only person in the vehicle, failed to negotiate the turn and crashed into the cement pillar, officials said.
He suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Del Sol Medical Center, where he later died, officials said.
The Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit investigators believe speed was a contributing factor in the wreck, officials said. The crash is under investigation.
This is the 12th traffic-related death of 2017 compared with 14 at the same time last year.
